Elma Germany was able to do this exciting project together with the customer König & Bauer. Our experts designed for the control of printing machines a MicroTCA system with a size of 7 U and 18 slots – dimensions that at first glance appear to be «outside» the MicroTCA specification expired. But the Elma engineers knew the right trick to two different ones to enable MicroTCA segments in one enclosure: The separate units were connected to one another via two separate MCHs using PCIe and gigabyte ethernet interfaces. The customer received an efficient and space-saving solution in which our designers could fall back on our in-house experience with the MicroTCA-blu! System family.
Thanks to the results of a thermal simulation and our many years of experience, we designed the cooling of the PCIe switch module is particularly efficient cooling concept: The use of a special heat sink as well as a matching cooling air duct excellent values. The backplane design required the use and bundling of all conceivable specialist skills. From the simulation of the signal integrity to high-speed design rules, complex SMD assembly and subsequent refinement to complex function test procedures, Elma has proven to be the right one partner for our customer. After a 4 U system version from 2010, this system solution is now the second project that König & Bauer is working with Elma came up.
